SMS Status Report

If a status report is received, the message will hold two numbers separated by a comma.

The first number is the message reference number. The second number is the message status code.

Acknowledgement when sending an SMS messages is an essential aspect in many systems. If the message has been successfully received, the value of the status code returned will be zero. Any error will result in the status code > 0, and the list below shows the different types of errors.

For example, if an SMS message is sent from the PD 664 to a cell phone that is switched off, the message may contain the string  “25,48” (Reference Number, Status Code). A short while after the phone is switched on, the PD 664 will receive a new SMS Status Report from the Service Centre, which will be the string “25,0”. The reference number indicates to which SMS the status report relates.

Status Code

A report may be a delivery report that confirms the delivery of the short message to the recipient, or it may be a failure report that informs the originator that the short message was never delivered and the reason why.

Short message (SM): Information that may be conveyed by means of the Short Message Service.

Service Centre (SC): Function responsible for the relaying and store-and-forwarding of a short message between an SME and an MS.
